Business Research Methods Assignment

Introduction

Business Research Methods

The lean product development research is paper that is intended on showing the positive side of the technique as it is both time and cost effective. It is more of an informative journal to do away with the myth that the technique is solely used in the automotive industry (Hilda, 2011). On the other hand, the logistics and chain management journal seized a lacuna in the global context of the technique. This is because it was being used but very little had been written about it at the global level. The review is more of a build upon the little that was done. It uses prior researches as a foundation for its assumptions.

The measure of central tendency that is used in both papers is mode. The journals are based on the use of already existing research conducted, in order to get the most detailed and easily understood; the papers were arranged from the one that had been used most times by other researchers, that is the one that appears the most time in the recent years. The use of the mode is time-saving because it gives the articles that have been more relevant to other researchers at a glance without performing other processes.

The main disadvantage of using mode, in this case, to try and find the research papers to use is that the information that the other researchers were looking for may not necessarily be the information that the current paper is completely interested in. There is also the chance that use of the same research papers as the other researchers may lead to replication of the information they did without knowing it (Cooper, 2011). This means that extra care should be put on the papers while drafting them.

logistics and chain management

The logistics and chain management application within a global context is applied research. This is because it basically focuses on the application of a logistics and supply model to firms internationally and how the firms can benefit from the use of the model (Schoenherr, 2009). It does not simply give us knowledge on what the model is all about, it relates the model to the everyday commercial activities of firms and how efficiency can be easily achieved. It also shows the success of the model.

The research questions that were used to come up with the journal include the following:

How is the technique of logistics and chain management used in countries outside the United States? For instance, countries that had already existing data like; the textile companies in Turkey, Potatoes distributors in Vietnam and the motor industry in Taiwan. How does the technique help to ease management? Increase performance? And advance selection of both markets and channels? How the technique improves the buyer-supplier relationship? How it leads to green supply chain management? These are some of the research questions that were exhaustively addressed by the overview look at the global application of logistics and supply chain management technique (Schoenherr, 2009).

The data that is used in the journal is acquired from the literature review, other research papers that were conducted. The papers used were the ones published from the year 200 to date; this was to ensure the data was manageable. The authors looked for specific words in the titles in picking the journal to use, this included the words logistics and chain management, international and global use of the mentioned technique, and this was to help them in narrowing down the papers required (Schoenherr, 2009). The initial number of paper on logistics and chain management retrieved were 7436, but only a subset of 726 was focused on the international application of the management technique. This led to the use of mode in checking from the 726, which were the most referred to and referenced journals by other prior researchers.

Explanation

There was the use of secondary sources for the data used in the paper. This is because the main sources were other papers written and the data acquired from them was used in this case. The papers were specifically based on the topic of logistics and chain management however there was a lacuna of a more international overview of the topic and the paper was meant to address that (Schoenherr, 2009). Most of the papers focused on individual countries or a particular industry in a specific country. There were also papers that focused on the markets in developing countries like Brazil and Botswana.

There was no real statistical analysis that was conducted on the sources acquired. Information was simply gathered and generalized to come up with an overview and detailed conclusion on the application of the technique (Schoenherr, 2009). The research paper in order to be approved for the journal had to have been used more often by other researchers. This was where mode was used. ABI/INFORM was used to give a more detailed look at the technique in different areas as well.

The research question that can be asked to probe for further investigation would be based on the emerging markets in India, Brazil, China and other developing countries in Asia and Africa. This is because most firms in developed countries like USA, U.K, and Canada are getting involved in the emerging markets and are lowering the high bars that were once placed, the real question is how well can logistics and chain management be applied to franchised outlets of a single firm in different emerging markets and maintain efficiency? An answer to this question would ultimately lower the hurdles that the firms put while initially investing in an emerging market due to the risk of experiencing losses.

The two journals that can be said to be related to the journals above are: for the logistics and chain management application globally, the Kotzab Herbert, Securing Stefan and Muller Martin, 2005, a paper titled; Research Methodologies in Supply Chain Management: electronic based. This is because the two papers focus on the application of the supply chain methodology to different industries internationally. Even though the latter pays more attention to the electronic sale and management of products (E-Market), their premise and conclusion are almost the same. The latter deals in E-Market; which aims at both the national and the international consumers, and seeks to tailor the products as per the specifications of the consumer. Even though most sales are made online there is a geographical location of the administration and the operational employees for the firm.

The other paper Lean Product Development Research: Current State and Future Directions has a paper that is closely similar to it and it is the Kidd, T. Terry, (2009), Research on Technology Project Management, Lean and Profitable Product Development. The two papers are similar in the essence that they both focus on the best ways out to deal with a strategy of developing a product. Basic to both journals is that the lean product development is aimed at improving the quality of the product and decreasing the time that is taken to produce the paper; time and cost-effectiveness are a priority (Hilda, 2011).

In the paper of logistics and chain management, there was the use of secondary sources of data and evaluation was done of the literature review. This was more of a quantitative research methodology. If i were to conduct the research personally i would combine both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The highlight would be qualitative as the journal would be aimed at helping people by giving them information. The topic is broad when it talks of an overview of the global context. I would first of all narrow I down to an overview of the globally emerging markets in order to deal with the contemporary issue at hand.

Conclusion

Primary sources of data would be combined with the already existing secondary sources. In the primary sources, I would pick the most prominent emerging market and that is in China and use questionnaires and interviews to collect the data (Cooper, 2011). I would then compare it with the existing data collected by other researchers and compile the paper. The methodology would involve a non-random selection method because I would be seeking for specific information from the firm employees I would be interviewing.

The research questions would not be so much on the efficiency of the technique because it has already been proved to be efficient. My research questions would be on the adaptability level of the technique to different socio-economic environments and how the performance will be affected after the incorporation of the technique (Cooper, 2011). The use of statistics would be a great part of it as the wordings would be less and the statistics back up information would be more especially because it is from both primary and secondary sources.
