Interpersonal communication is considered a part of one’s daily life. An individual’s knack in interpersonal communication is of paramount importance. Due to the aforementioned fact, interpersonal communication is inescapable. Generally, interpersonal communication is termed to be the interactions between individuals whether verbal or nonverbal. When an individual is competent in interpersonal communication they are referred to as possessing ‘people skills’. In a classroom setting a student who possesses ‘people skills’ stands a higher chance of relating to a wide variety of people. Furthermore, he/she requests and receives information with ease.
Discussion
There is a perception that interpersonal communication is exclusively oral. Nevertheless, this is a misconception since through some negotiations between individuals the interpersonal communication may assume a written form. Ultimately, written forms of communication such as chats, emails, and letters may also qualify to be forms of interpersonal communication.
In my bid to establish the different concepts under interpersonal communication, I conducted conversations with random students in my class. The topic of discussion in our conversation was one’s opinion with regard to the implementation of gender equality in society. The topic was a contentious one and I used it to gauge different traits of the individual I was having conversing with.
The first student
The first student appeared to be more aware of the topic. She had an unconventional opinion with regard to the topic aforementioned. The topic appeared to have stirred her emotions and she appeared to be very emotional when executing her opinion. The personality trait of the first student was to a large extent openness to experience. While conversing with her, she exhibited intellectual curiosity about the topic of discussion and always inquired more about my opinion. Further, it is worth noting that the student was an enthusiast of liberal ethics. With regard to our topic of discussion, she exhibited that she was beaming with ideas and swift in comprehending the subject matter.
With regard to the concept of interpersonal needs, the first student portrayed an aura of control. She reflected her urge to control things and people around her. The rationale behind the aforementioned deduction is because she possesses the urge to have a degree of power over her surrounding. Majority of relationships are characterized by power sharing control. Every individual has a say on what happens in that setting. Various researches have concluded that an individual’s interpersonal need for control is highly influenced by one’s self-esteem. In some instances, one should permit exertion of control since it aids the development of the interdependent nature of personal interaction.
The second student
The second student was very different from the first one. She exhibited a conscientious personality trait. While talking to her I noticed that she was very soft-spoken. She did not exhibit much intellectual curiosity as a former student. While having our conversation she exhibited that she had a planned approach to everything in her life. She paid close attention to every question that was addressed to her. Such an individual’s conscientious nature controls all her inclination. It is worth noting that the degree of conscientious varies in individuals depending on one’s age. Younger adults exhibit a higher level of conscientiousness than their older age group. This is to say that the degree of conscientiousness varies with age.
With regard to the second student’s interpersonal need, she appeared to be in need of inclusion. She portrayed a picture of having an urge to belonging among her peers. What she needed was increased inclusion in her peer’s activities and overall positive human interactions. The need for inclusion varies from one individual to another. Furthermore, even the individuals who are considered to be loners require a certain degree of interaction. Various concluded studies have revealed that one can suffer physical or mental distress if he/she lacks inclusion.
The final student
The final student was of the male gender. His character trait was an extravert. Our conversation was swift since it appeared that he possessed the ‘people’s skill’. He exhibited some sort of comfort while having a conversation. At most times he was the conversation starter thus doing most of the talking. While explaining his facts he exhibited action orienting. He made a point to assert himself while we were exchanging opinions. Due to his extravert character, he tends to have higher self-esteem. Individuals with high self-esteem can express their feeling of affection with ease than introverts. With regard to the aforementioned statement, introverts exhibit a higher degree of need for affection than the third student since they have self-esteem issues.
Still, on the matter of interpersonal communication, the paper highlights a further concept termed as first impressions. A number of scholars have asserted that individuals determine or decide the perception of a person a few minutes after they met them. Obviously, the interval before he makes his/her mind once they meet an individual varies. For some individuals, the interval of the assertion of the first impression may take as few as a couple of seconds. At all times when an individual is faced with the responsibility of asserting the first impression, he/she bears all the attitudes and values on the state of affair. Once the aforementioned process takes place an individual comprehends hastily. Due to this fact, all the students interviewed had varying and distinct first impressions.
The other concept which the paper gives an insight on is self-confidence and trust. Through the various conversations with the students, I reflected on the number of their concerns that are correlated to self-confidence and trust. Whether either of the interrogated students is fed up with being without a friend and he/she can do nothing about it since they cannot come into terms with feeling self-worth. Whatever negative feeling the individual might have about him/herself has a generic source namely lack of self-belief or respect.
The final concept related to interpersonal communication is physical attractiveness. Through the conversations I had with the selected students I realized that every individual had their own measure for physical attractiveness. This simply meant that the term physical attractiveness may be attributed to various aspects. However, in quite a number of scenarios individuals attribute one’s physical attractiveness to positive aspects such as integrity or aptitude. A research that was recently conducted in the United States reveals that the male gender link intelligence with attractiveness more than their female counterparts.
In our daily lives, individuals have to deal with a flawed system of communication breakdown. The ability of an individual to have efficient communication skills enables them to overcome the changes in interpersonal communication. Some of the flaws in the communication system may arise from the sender. The sender might not be capable to select the right word to relay what one means. Different individuals may have different meanings for one word. Alternatively, the problem may be attributed to the receiver. The receiver may distort the information that he hears.
All humans have a filter which aids one to control the amount of sound or information that he/she receives. Additionally, one also possesses emotional filters which assist him/her in distorting one’s comprehension. Another problem on the receiver’s part is that he/she may be easily distracted. The aforementioned statement is attributed to the fact that individuals may talk faster than their ability to listen. This leads to an individual having poor listening skills.
Conclusion
The remedy to poor communication skills is improving on one’s listening skills. It is worth noting that only a few individuals are good listeners since one may hear but not listen. A good listener is supposed to pay attention and answer the sender. In addition to this one may adopt the improved reading of body language. Body language has been part of interpersonal communication since before the emergence of actual communication. The rationale behind the above statement is because our forefathers employed non-verbal signs as a means of communication.
It is not disputed that words act as carters of accurate information but when emotions are fused in the communication then one has to consider the non-verbal aspect of communication. In order for the receiver to be able to read the body language of the sender effectively, one has to capture and interpret the facial expressions. Furthermore, the tone of the sender may also be analyzed to reveal whether he/she is angered or depressed among other feelings.
