Written by C. Van Woodward, the strange career of Jim Crow is a book written about the post civil war era. The book shows the condition of the south after the end of the civil war and the way the black Americans were treated as a result. Jim crow was responsible for the policies that brought about segregation in the southern part of the United States. The book is a reflection of the life of the natives of the south both black and white before and after the Jim Crow laws.
The purpose of the paper is to make an analysis of C. Van Woodward’s “The strange career of Jim crow”. The author’s major goal is to voice the opinion of the people who lived in the south at this period. During this time the civil war had just taken place. The civil war marked by the war between the Northern and the Southern states. The book writes on the reasons that led to the war and how the African Americans were affected. The author’s intension is to project the social cultural situation of both races of communities in this area. This is derived fromthe analysis of one of the leaders at the time: Jim Crow, whoseactions played a significant role in the community.
Organization of the book and the particular approach (methodology) is utilized
The book is organized in a way that makes it easy for the reader to approach. Woodward’s introduction gives a brief history of the situation in the South in relation to the civil war. This educates the reader about the events that transpired thus giving the reader basic knowledge of the contents of the book. The book is divided into fourmain sections that mark the major phases that the led to the provision of equal rights and opportunities for the black.
Summary of the chapters
The first section contains the history of the south at the time of the slave trade. This chapter talks about the prosperity of the southern states due to the use of slaves who provided cheap labor. At this time slavery was legal thus making the economy of south predominantly an agricultural economy.
The second part of the chapters talks about the situation in the south before Jim crow came into power. It states that the segregation in the south was not as serious before Crow came into power. Some of the policies that were placed on the African Americans changed the dynamics of the way the blacks and the whites communicated. Most of the public facilities were separated making it difficult for both races to interact with each other.
The third part of the book takes a new turn in that it concentrates on the consequences of the appointment of Crow. It shows the way the Second affected the blacks in the South. The books display the pivotal transformations for the black communities in that most of the rules that segregated both communities were abolished.
The fourth part talks about the beginning of the formation of the civil right movements. The movements were introduced to protest against the treatment of the black community. They demanded for equal treatment and better opportunities which they had been denied for a long time. Most of the augments provided in the book are accurate in that it was written after the conducting a number for interviews with the natives of the south.
Some discussion of the sources drawn upon and the ways in which they have been used
This type of book requires an enormous amount of evidence which demands credibility. Woodward used his position as a scholar to carefully research all the evidence provided in the book. Most of the sources of the books were derived from the database in the University of Sacramental. Woodward had spent an adequate amount of time researching on this area. His sources are thus drawn from public sources which contain some of the record of the events that were reported at the time.
Comment on the persuasiveness of the text
The text is persuasive in that it not only tells the story of the people who played a significant role in the events of the post civil war era. It provides examples for each and every point that the author intends to bring out. The facts are backed up evidence from the public institutions in the south.
Consider how the arguments and evidence contained in the book exposes (sheds light on) the people and the region.
The arguments in the book provide stories of people who lived in the south at the time of these events. As stated earlier, it gives the writers examples of the events that transpired at this period. These arguments are essential for understanding the situation of the community in all aspects of their lives. The evidence contained in the book brings out the amount of oppression that was inflicted on the members of the black community when the government was taken over by a president from the South. The change in most of the policies ensured that the white citizen’s needs were placed above the blacks. This was not known to the rest of the country in that other states were more open to the provision of equal opportunity to all races.
These examples thus bring out the hatred that the white man had from the African Americans. The southern people have been less receptive to the African American community compared to the rest of the country. After the war, the northern states emerged at the top making the people of the south vulnerable. This disgrace made the southern states have resentment for the northern states and the blacks. Since there was no way of punishing the northern states, the African American community suffered most of the oppression as a result. The books thus shed light on some of the forms of abuse that the black southerners were accustomed. This removes the ignorance of the rest of the country in that they are educated on the reason for some of the present social cultural arrangement of the natives of the south.
Comment on additional features such as style, readability length, and general presentation
The style of the book is unique in that it allows for the reader to get interested in the pages to come. This is owed to the style in which the book is written. The book is an easy read due to the use of language that makes it easy to understand. The book has gone through a number of reversions making the latest versions brief. Despite this, it gives a thorough analysis of the political and social cultural aspects of the south. Woodward did not shy away from the facts. His approach was provocative which was intended to show the seriousness of the topic at hand.
In conclusion, the Civil war was caused by a number of issues in the country at the time. The war resulted to a number of factors both negative and positive. One of the major results was the freeing of the slaves. The book talks about the time blacks got independence to the time they received equal treatment.
