Introduction

Angelou is arguing that a person who delivers a speech can affect the manner in which the crowd listening to it will respond. She believed that Henry Reed influenced the crowd positively, while Mr. Edward Donleavy did nothing but to influence the crowd negatively.

The manner which the crowd reacted to the negative speech by Mr. Donleavy proves that they were not going to accept people who had nothing to offer the students. The community was made up of individuals who were not racist, but rather those who believed that there is no superior race. The community thus supported the graduates through the manner they reacted to the speeches.
The argument presented by Angelou is supported by the fact that the graduates were supported by the community. In her argument, she claimed that people will respond to a speech based on its contents and emotional appeal. Therefore, the community supported the graduates when they responded positively to Reed’s speech and negatively to Mr. Donleavy’s speech.

The crowd that he was addressing had both black and white individuals, yet he chose to praise others and also humiliate others. He went on to name some historical figures, but this could not help him gain popularity. Instead, the crowd did not view him to be credible and they even lost confidence in him.
The reaction that the crowd had to Mr. Donleavy’s speech clearly supports the main argument presented by Angelou. She had argued that a crowd will not be influenced positively to a speaker who speaks about his own opinions without caring about the crowd being addressed. Mr. Donleavy failed to realize this and thus the reason why the crowd reacted negatively to him. However, the crowd reacted positively to Reed’s speech because he ensured that everyone would be inspired regardless of their background. The speech he gave was that of an intelligent person who had the interests of everyone.
Angelou is able to show how the crowd reacted to Henry Reed’s speech. She presented him in a positive light and showed that he had extreme confidence when presenting his speech.
