Introduction

Being permissive is the state of an individual being able to grant permission or not been able been strict in discipline. This state makes an individual allow many things to happen without giving much consideration of the after events that may follow (Strackbein, 1970).

This is because no matter what the child does he is not liable to any questioning from the parent. The child may have no regard to others needs and wants and definitely becomes so ignorant and may act like a selfish and self-centered brat (Strackbein, 1970). The child expects others to take responsibility for him/her.

No matter how much you give to your child it never seems enough for him and even though you may be a constant giver it may never seem enough to your child. The child will always be angry with the parent and lacks any sense of self-discipline. The child will always be overly needy, lacks self-direction, always angry, depressed and the child will always feel unloved due to the parent’s withdrawal (Strackbein, 1970).

Apart from permissive having adverse effects on the child, it also bears the same burden to the permissive child. It may seem easier in the short run for the parent but in the long run, it becomes very hard to near. The parent feels trapped and used, resentful. The child is always angry at the parent and the child will often shut you out. The parent would no longer feel the fun of parenting as it now becomes a burden (Strackbein, 1970). The parent will feel resentful towards the child and will always be angry or frustrated. The child will view the parent as a failure and they would no longer have fun together.

Permissive parenting creates a generation of children who think that they do not need to work hard to reach where they need to be. This is because their parents do not guide them through the consequences of unacceptable behavior. The children think that they can get away with mediocre and they are always angry when things don’t go their way.

Permissiveness among teachers in the education system will see many cases of school dropouts and the society will definitely laden with minds that are not in any way useful to society(Znianneki, 1967). The effects of being permissive in the education system are both felt in the long and short terms.

In relationships, if a partner happens to be permissive, this may be the end of a relationship. This is so because being permissive makes the other party becomes bored because there are no restrictions (Skinner, 1953). This might be the opening to cheating and infidelity. It may open up to arguments and may lead to breaking up. One partner will feel unwanted in the relationship and will not feel the urge to continue being in the relationship. Relationships in which the partners have children may have many effects on the children since they may start feeling out of the family bracket and this may be suicidal since they may also lose the parental love.

Generally, being permissive in some cases may be beneficial but in most cases, it happens to be destructive (Skinner, 1953). Being permissive is a classical condition that may not be necessarily useful but it should be controlled so as to ensure it doesn’t go to the extent of being destructive (Sorokin, 1942).
